Do Walmart Neighborhood Markets Have Gas Stations?

The short answer: a large share of Walmart Neighborhood Markets sell gas, but not all of them. Walmart has never put fuel at every store, and the smaller Neighborhood Market format is no exception. What makes the format interesting for drivers is who runs the pumps when they exist. At Supercenters, the gas station out front is usually a Murphy USA kiosk — an independent company that leases the pad. At Neighborhood Markets, it is usually the other way around: the forecourt is a Walmart Fuel & Convenience station, owned and priced by Walmart itself, with the same everyday-low-price posture as the store behind it.

In our database of 1,545 Walmart sites with fuel, 260 are Neighborhood Markets. Walmart runs the pumps at 232 of them; a Murphy USA station sits on the property at the other 28. 2. Who runs the pumps — and why it is the reverse of Supercenters

Murphy USA built its network in Supercenter parking lots between 1996 and 2017, which is why roughly seven in ten Supercenter gas stations today are Murphy-run. Walmart only began building its own stations in earnest after that partnership ended in 2016 — and the Neighborhood Market rollout is where much of that construction happened. The result is a clean split: 89% of the Neighborhood Market stations we track are Walmart Fuel & Convenience, while the 28 Murphy-served Neighborhood Markets are mostly older sites in Murphy's Southern heartland.

Which operator you are standing at changes the practical details. At a Walmart-run pump you scan a QR code with the Walmart app and pay through Walmart Pay; at a Murphy pump you key in a 6-digit Walmart+ code instead, and Murphy Drive Rewards applies. Both take the Walmart+ fuel discount of up to 10¢ per gallon. 4. Is Neighborhood Market gas cheaper than Supercenter gas?

On today's snapshot, regular at Neighborhood Market stations averages $3.921, against $4.032 across the rest of the Walmart fuel network. Any gap between the two is mostly geography rather than policy: Neighborhood Market fuel is concentrated in low-tax Southern states, while the wider network includes Walmart-run stations in California, Arizona, and the Mountain West. Within the same town, a Neighborhood Market and a Supercenter station are usually within a few cents of each other — both operators price to sit at the low end of the local market.
