Walmart+ Gas Discount Explained: How It Works, Which Stations Take It, and How Much You Really Save
Walmart+ knocks 10 cents off every gallon at more than 14,000 Exxon, Mobil, Walmart and Murphy USA pumps, and unlocks member pricing at Sam's Club. This guide covers exactly how the benefit works at each brand of pump, why it sometimes fails to apply, what Walmart associates actually get, how the savings compare to simply choosing a cheaper station, and which viral "gas code" claims are real.

Search interest in the Walmart gas discount has never been about a single question. People want to know whether they need a membership to pump gas at Walmart (they do not), which stations honor the Walmart+ discount, why the discount did not show up on their receipt, whether it works at Sam's Club, whether Walmart employees get cheaper fuel, and what the numbers being passed around on TikTok actually unlock. This article answers all of that in one place, and it puts the 10-cent benefit in context against a far bigger lever: the gap between what Walmart-lot pumps charge and what the average American station charges.
Everything below reflects the program as it stands in September 2026. Walmart adjusts the fuel benefit periodically (it was 5 cents at Walmart and Murphy pumps until April 2022, and Exxon and Mobil were not part of it at all), so the section on promotions explains how to recognize a temporary boost versus a permanent change.
1. What the Walmart+ Gas Discount Actually Is
The fuel benefit is one of the standing perks of Walmart+, Walmart's paid membership program. It is not a separate "gas card," not a loyalty program you enroll in at the pump, and not a coupon. When you pay for fuel through the Walmart app at a participating station, the pump price is reduced by a fixed number of cents per gallon before you are charged.
- 10 cents per gallon at participating Exxon and Mobil stations, and 5 to 10 cents per gallon at Walmart-branded fuel stations and Murphy USA stations. Walmart's help center describes the Walmart and Murphy figure as "depending on local laws." In practice, the full 10 cents applies in most states.
- 5 cents per gallon in Alabama across all partner brands. Alabama's Motor Fuel Marketing Act bars selling motor fuel below cost, a law written specifically to stop big-box retailers from underpricing independent stations, and the reduced discount is how the program stays compliant there.
- Every fuel grade qualifies. Exxon's own program page states the savings apply "whether you fill up with Exxon Supreme+ premium gasoline or any other fuel grade." Premium buyers get the same 10 cents as regular buyers. Diesel is not called out as excluded anywhere in the published terms.
- No published gallon cap. Unlike Murphy Drive Rewards redemptions, which stop at 20 gallons, the Walmart+ terms say the discount applies "on every gallon of fuel they purchase." The only practical limit is the pump's own transaction ceiling.
- Member pricing at Sam's Club fuel centers, which is a different mechanism from a per-gallon discount. Section 2 explains the distinction, because it is the single most misunderstood part of the program.
- App only. Exxon's FAQ is blunt: "The fuel discount can't be applied without the Walmart app." Swiping the same credit card you used to pay for Walmart+ does nothing on its own.
What Walmart+ costs in 2026
| Plan | Annual | Monthly | Who qualifies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walmart+ | $98 | $12.95 | Anyone; 30-day free trial for new members |
| Walmart+ Assist | $49 | $6.47 | Recipients of SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, SSI, TANF, NSLP or LIHEAP, verified through SheerID |
| Walmart+ Student | $49 | $6.47 | Enrolled college and graduate students |
| Associate Walmart+ | $0 | $0 | Eligible Walmart U.S. field associates (see Section 7) |
Every tier includes the identical fuel benefit. AARP members can take $40 off the annual plan, and American Express Platinum cardholders can have the $12.95 monthly plan reimbursed as a statement credit, which effectively makes the gas discount free for those two groups.
2. Which Gas Stations Take Walmart+
Five brands participate. The network passed 14,000 stations when Exxon and Mobil joined in April 2022, a more than sixfold expansion from the roughly 2,200 Walmart, Murphy and Sam's Club pumps that were in the program at launch in 2020. Each brand redeems the discount differently, which is why the same member can breeze through one station and stall at the next.
| Brand | U.S. locations | Discount | How it is redeemed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exxon and Mobil | ~12,000 | 10¢ / gal (5¢ AL) | Scan the pump QR code or enter the pump number in the Walmart app, then pay through the app |
| Murphy USA and Murphy Express | ~1,650 | 5–10¢ / gal | Press the Walmart+ button on the pump and type your 6-digit discount ID from the app; pay with any card at the pump |
| Walmart fuel stations | ~455 | 5–10¢ / gal | Scan the QR code on the pump screen with the app and pay through Walmart Pay |
| Sam's Club fuel centers | ~560 | Member price | Scan the pump QR code with the Walmart app; at public-access clubs the difference is 5¢, and none in New Jersey |
The Walmart parking lot has two kinds of pump
Our station database tracks 1,549 Walmart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets with fuel across 36 states. Only 455 are Walmart-branded fuel stations run by Walmart itself. The other 1,094 are Murphy USA kiosks that lease a corner of the lot. Both take Walmart+, but the redemption method differs: QR code at the Walmart pump, keypad discount ID at the Murphy pump. Look at the canopy, not the parking lot, to know which flow to use.
Sam's Club is member pricing, not a discount
Sam's Club fuel centers post one price for members. Most clubs are members-only forecourts, and a Walmart+ membership lets you pump there without a Sam's card. At the minority of clubs that are open to the general public (usually those co-located with a Walmart or required by state law to serve everyone), Sam's Club states it offers a 5-cent discount to both Sam's members and Walmart+ users, except in New Jersey, where state law prohibits membership-based fuel discounting. You do not receive an additional 10 cents on top of the member price.
3. How to Use the Walmart+ Gas Discount at Each Pump
Every flow starts the same way: open the Walmart app, tap Services in the bottom bar, then tap Member prices on fuel (some app versions label it "Gas savings"). That screen opens a camera scanner, shows your personal discount ID at the bottom, and links to a map of participating stations. Location services must be on for the station map and the pump pairing to work.
Pump number plus in-app payment
- Park at the pump but do not insert or tap a card.
- In the app, tap Member prices on fuel, then scan the Walmart+ QR code on the pump. It is often a small, unbranded blue code, not the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ code.
- If there is no code, tap Fuel up for less and type the pump number instead.
- Choose a payment card stored in Walmart Pay. It does not have to be the card that pays for your membership.
- Select the grade on the pump and fill. The discount is applied to the posted price before the charge. Receipts print at the pump; the savings also appear in your app purchase history.
Six-digit discount ID on the keypad
- On the pump screen, press the Walmart+ option (on older pumps it may sit behind a "Loyalty ID" or "Rewards" prompt).
- Type the 6-digit discount ID shown in your app. The ID is tied to your membership and changes over time, so read it fresh each visit.
- Pay with any card at the pump, or pay inside by giving the cashier your ID, pump number and prefill amount.
- Murphy pumps do not send a digital receipt to the Walmart app. Ask the attendant for a printed one if you need it.
QR code on the screen, Walmart Pay
- Tap Member prices on fuel, then Pay at Pump.
- Scan the QR code on the pump display. On Walmart's newer Nexus pumps with large screens it sits on the right side of the display.
- Select your payment method in Walmart Pay and choose the grade in the app.
- To pay with cash, choose Pay Inside instead, have the associate scan your barcode, and pay before pumping.
Walmart Pay unlocks the members-only pump
- Tap Member prices on fuel, then Pay at Pump (older builds: Use Walmart Pay).
- Scan the QR code on the Sam's pump. This is what authorizes the pump without a Sam's Club card.
- Choose your card. Sam's pumps place a pre-authorization hold that varies by club, so a low-limit or locked card can decline here even though the app step succeeded.
- The price you pay is the posted member price; there is no extra 10 cents.
4. Why the Walmart+ Gas Discount Sometimes Does Not Work
"Walmart plus gas discount not working" is one of the most common searches in this topic, and almost every failure traces back to one of the following causes.
You paid at the pump with a physical card.
Inserting or tapping a card at an Exxon, Mobil or Walmart pump bypasses the app entirely. Walmart’s own guidance for its Nexus pumps says not to use Tap to Pay or insert a credit card if you want the discount. The transaction has to originate from Walmart Pay inside the app.
You typed the discount ID at an Exxon pump.
The 6-digit ID only means something to Murphy USA pumps. At Exxon and Mobil it is ignored, and typing it into the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ field enrolls you in nothing.
You scanned the wrong QR code.
Exxon and Mobil pumps usually carry two codes: a branded Exxon Mobil Rewards+ code and an unbranded code for the Walmart app. Only the second one pairs the pump with your membership.
You are in Alabama.
The discount is working; it is 5 cents in Alabama by law. The receipt will show a nickel, not a dime.
The station is not participating.
Exxon and Mobil sites are independently owned and a small share opt out. If the station does not appear on the in-app map, the discount will not apply no matter how you pay.
Your membership lapsed or the trial converted.
A failed renewal payment quietly removes the fuel benefit. Check the Walmart+ tab in the app before assuming the pump is at fault.
You expected 10 cents at Sam’s Club.
Sam’s Club pumps show the member price. At members-only clubs there is no line-item discount on the receipt at all; at public-access clubs it is 5 cents.
Location services are off.
The app needs your location to confirm you are at a participating station and, at Exxon and Mobil, to pair with the correct pump.
If the discount still fails at a station that appears on the map, Walmart customer care (1-800-WALMART) can review the transaction against your membership. The pump attendant cannot apply it retroactively.
5. How Much You Actually Save With Walmart+ on Gas
The arithmetic is simple because the discount is a flat number of cents, not a percentage. Ten cents on a 15-gallon fill is $1.50. On a 20-gallon fill it is $2.00. On a 26-gallon pickup tank it is $2.60. Annual savings therefore depend only on how many gallons you buy at participating pumps in a year.
| Driver profile | Miles / year | MPG | Gallons / year | Savings at 10¢ | Savings at 5¢ (AL) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compact commuter | 12,000 | 28 | 429 | $43 | $21 |
| Average U.S. driver | 13,500 | 25 | 540 | $54 | $27 |
| Full-size pickup or SUV | 15,000 | 17 | 882 | $88 | $44 |
| Two-vehicle household | 27,000 | 22 | 1,227 | $123 | $61 |
Assumes every gallon is bought at a participating pump. Real-world figures are lower because nobody fuels exclusively at Exxon, Mobil, Walmart and Murphy. Independent estimates from credit-card and deals publications land in the same range, typically $60 to $75 a year for a single vehicle.
980 gal
$98 ÷ $0.10. About 65 fifteen-gallon fills, or 5.4 a month.
130 gal / mo
$12.95 ÷ $0.10. Roughly 8.6 fifteen-gallon fills every month.
490 gal
$49 ÷ $0.10. A single average driver gets close to covering it on fuel alone.
The bigger lever: which pump you choose matters more than the membership
On August 31, 2026, our daily pull of every Walmart-lot forecourt put the national regular average at $3.610, against an EIA national average of $4.071. That is a 46.1-cent gap, or about $6.92 on a 15-gallon fill, before any membership is involved. Murphy USA kiosks in Walmart lots averaged $3.580, Walmart-branded pumps $3.681, and Sam's Club fuel centers $3.736. The 10-cent Walmart+ discount is worth having, but it is roughly one-fifth the size of the saving you get simply by pulling into a Walmart lot instead of the nearest corner station. Full breakdown in our August 2026 Walmart gas price report.
Promotional boosts, and how to spot the difference
ExxonMobil has periodically multiplied the discount for limited windows, and these events are the source of most "Walmart 50 cents off gas" and "Walmart 20 cents off gas" searches:
- 50 cents per gallon at roughly 12,000 Exxon and Mobil stations during Walmart+ Week, April 28 to May 4, 2025, alongside a sweepstakes to win a truck for 50 cents. On a 20-gallon tank that was $10 per fill.
- 20 cents per gallon (a doubled discount) at Exxon and Mobil from August 15 to September 15 in an earlier summer promotion.
- Both reverted to the standard 10 cents when the window closed. A promotion is always announced by Walmart or ExxonMobil with explicit dates, is applied automatically through the same app flow, and never requires a special code.
6. Stacking Walmart+ With Rewards Programs and Credit Cards
Exxon Mobil Rewards+: does not stack
Exxon's FAQ states the Walmart+ benefit "does not stack with the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ program (base, Frequent Filler or AARP), the Exxon Mobil Smart Card+ credit card or the Exxon Mobil Direct Debit+ program," and no points are earned on a Walmart+ transaction. Rewards+ pays 3 points per gallon (3 cents) on regular, midgrade and diesel and 6 on premium, plus 1 extra for AARP or Frequent Filler status. Unless you are stacking Direct Debit+ toward the program's 20-cent ceiling, the flat 10 cents from Walmart+ beats it on every grade except premium, where the two are nearly even.
Murphy Drive Rewards: does not stack
Murphy USA's rewards page states that Drive Rewards fuel benefits are not available when using a Walmart+ member fuel discount. At a Murphy pump you take the Walmart+ 10 cents or a Drive Rewards redemption, whichever is larger that day. Redemptions cap at 20 gallons per transaction, so use the Walmart+ code on ordinary fills and save points for one large redemption on a near-empty tank.
Credit card rewards: always stack
Walmart+ lowers the price; your card earns on whatever you actually pay. Any card stored in Walmart Pay works, including cards that offer 3 to 5 percent on gas. The Walmart MoneyCard prepaid account pays 2 percent back at Walmart and Murphy USA fuel stations (capped at $75 a year). The new OnePay Walmart credit card, issued by Synchrony after Walmart's split from Capital One, pays 5 percent at Walmart for Walmart+ members and 3 percent otherwise; its published terms do not single out fuel, so confirm how a Murphy or Exxon purchase codes before counting on it.
Amazon Prime: the closest competitor
Prime members get the same 10 cents per gallon at about 7,500 BP, Amoco, ampm and Thorntons stations through BP's earnify app, on all grades with no gallon limit. Amazon estimates it is worth nearly $70 a year. Walmart+ covers roughly twice as many pumps, but the better program is whichever brand is on your daily route. The two do not conflict, and a household with both memberships can cover almost any highway exit.
7. Do Walmart Associates Get a Gas Discount?
Not through the Associate Discount Card. That card takes 10 percent off regularly priced general merchandise and fresh produce, and fuel is on its exclusion list alongside alcohol, tobacco, gift cards and pharmacy items. Presenting an associate badge or discount card at a Walmart or Murphy pump does nothing.
Associates do get the fuel benefit another way. Walmart's 2026 Associate Benefits Book lists a no-cost Walmart+ membership for eligible Walmart U.S. field associates (Sam's Club associates receive a complimentary Sam's Club Plus membership instead). That free membership carries the identical 10-cent fuel discount as a paid one, redeemed through the same app steps in Section 3. So the accurate answer to "do Walmart employees get discount on gas" is: yes, 10 cents a gallon at 14,000 stations, but only if they have activated their associate Walmart+ membership, and never at the register.
Searches for "fuel station associate at Walmart" refer to a job title, not a perk. Walmart-branded fuel stations are staffed by fuel station team associates who handle inside sales and pump support at the roughly 455 company-run forecourts.
8. TikTok "Gas Codes," Rollback Codes and Other Claims, Checked
Short videos promising a "Walmart gas code" or a "rollback code for Walmart gas" rack up millions of views, and the search data shows people looking for them by the thousands. Here is what each claim is actually pointing at.
| The claim | Verdict | What is really going on |
|---|---|---|
| "Type this code at the pump for cheaper gas" | Misleading | The number in these videos is the creator's own 6-digit Walmart+ discount ID, which only works at Murphy USA pumps. It is tied to one membership, rotates, and using someone else's violates the Walmart+ terms. There is no universal code. |
| "Walmart 50 cents off gas" | Expired promotion | Real for one week: Walmart+ Week, April 28 to May 4, 2025, at Exxon and Mobil only. It ended on schedule. The everyday benefit is 10 cents. |
| "Walmart 20 cents off gas" | Expired promotion | A doubled Exxon and Mobil discount that ran from August 15 to September 15 in a prior year. Watch for a repeat, but do not expect it without an announcement. |
| "Walmart 3 cents off gas" / "rollback code" | Discontinued program | In the 2010s Walmart ran a year-round discount at its own and Murphy pumps in about 22 states: 3 cents with a Walmart MoneyCard or gift card, 5 cents with a Walmart credit card, plus seasonal "Great Gas Rollback" events at 10 to 15 cents. That program was replaced by Walmart+ in 2020. No rollback code exists today. |
| "Walmart gas discount code" / "Walmart gas coupon" | Does not exist | Walmart does not issue fuel coupons or promo codes. Any site offering one is harvesting clicks or personal data. The only discount is the membership benefit, applied automatically in the app. |
| "You need a membership to buy gas at Walmart" | False | Walmart fuel stations and Murphy USA kiosks sell to everyone. The membership only changes the price. Sam's Club is the members-only exception, and even there a Walmart+ membership or a public-access club lets non-members pump. |
| "Walmart gas preset code" | Just a pump feature | Videos showing a "preset" trick are demonstrating the ordinary prepay dollar-amount button on Walmart and Murphy pumps. It stops the pump at a set total. It does not change the price. |
| "Walmart gas is Sam's Club gas" | Partly true | Both retailers are Walmart Inc., and both fuel networks accept Walmart+. But they are separate forecourts with separate pricing: Sam's Club averaged $3.736 on August 31 while Walmart-lot pumps averaged $3.610. |
9. Is Walmart+ Worth It for Gas Alone?
Judged strictly as a fuel discount, Walmart+ pays for itself only for drivers who buy at least 980 gallons a year at participating pumps on the annual plan. That is a two-vehicle household, a high-mileage commuter, or a pickup owner who lives near an Exxon, Mobil or Murphy. A single average driver covers roughly half the annual fee on fuel and needs the free delivery, streaming or shipping perks to make up the rest. For Walmart+ Assist and Student members at $49, one average driver comes close to break-even on gas alone.
Strong case
- Exxon or Mobil is your default station and you fill up weekly.
- You already pay for Walmart+ for delivery, or get it free as an associate, through Amex Platinum, or at the AARP rate.
- You drive a truck or run a two-car household and fuel in Walmart lots.
- You buy premium, where the flat 10 cents beats Exxon Mobil Rewards+.
Weak case
- You live in Alabama, where break-even doubles to 1,960 gallons.
- Your nearest participating pump is out of the way; a detour of a few miles erases a $1.50 saving.
- You already fuel at Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's or a cheap independent that undercuts Exxon by more than 10 cents.
- You want the discount at Shell, BP, Marathon or Chevron, none of which participate.
The practical strategy for most drivers is to treat the membership as the second step, not the first. Start by checking what the Walmart-lot pumps and Sam's Club near you are charging today, because that price gap is several times larger than any membership perk. Then, if you are already a member, make sure every one of those fills goes through the app so the extra dime lands too.
