How to Pay at Murphy USA: Walmart Gift Cards, Walmart Pay, Apple Pay, EBT & Cash Back
The gas station in the Walmart parking lot is usually not Walmart. That one fact is why a Walmart gift card dies at the pump, Walmart Pay has nothing to scan, and Apple Pay works here even when the blue canopy next door still will not take a tap. 1. Master Table: What Murphy Accepts vs What Walmart Accepts
We track 1,093 Murphy kiosks in Walmart lots and 556 standalone Murphy USA / Murphy Express stores (377 still tagged Express). Payment rules are company-wide. The contrast is the 452 blue-canopy Walmart Fuel & Convenience stations and 532 Sam's Club fuel centers, which run on Walmart's registers. 2. Can You Use a Walmart Gift Card at Murphy's Gas Station?
No. This is the highest-volume question in the cluster, and most ranking pages are still describing a 2012–2022 promotion. Murphy USA accepted Walmart gift cards for about a decade and, for most of that stretch, knocked 3 cents a gallon off for using one. That discount ended in January 2022. Acceptance itself ended December 31, 2022. Pump stickers from that winter read “We will no longer be accepting Walmart gift cards effective December 31, 2022.” Forum posts from the first week of 2023 confirmed the decline at both the outdoor reader and the walk-up window.
The cutoff is chainwide: the kiosk in the Walmart lot, standalone Murphy USA, and Murphy Express. Plastic cards and eGift barcodes fail the same way. There is no “pay inside and they will take it” workaround, because the register is Murphy's, not Walmart's. A Walmart gift card is a closed-loop balance on Walmart's ledger; Murphy USA, Inc. (NYSE: MUSA) cannot debit it.

3. Does Murphy Have Gift Cards? Visa Gift Cards and Buying Cards in the Store
Murphy's own payments page has a section labeled Murphy Gift Cards. Those are Murphy USA store cards, sold at participating registers, and they work for fuel and merchandise at Murphy USA and Murphy Express. They are not Walmart gift cards. Murphy's debit-hold FAQ also notes that “any gift card accepted at our stations” is not subject to the pump pre-authorization hold — another reason to prepay a Murphy card at the window if your checking account is tight.
- Murphy USA gift cards: buy at the register, spend at Murphy. Do not expect them to work at Walmart, Sam's Club, or Exxon.
- Visa / Mastercard gift cards: treated like prepaid debit. Many issuers (including the Walmart Visa Gift Card from Green Dot) block pay-at-pump until you walk inside and run the card as a set dollar amount with ZIP/AVS. Plan on the kiosk window.
- Buying other gift cards at Murphy: Express stores with a full c-store rack may sell third-party cards; compact Walmart-lot kiosks often do not. You cannot pay for those cards with a Walmart gift card, because Murphy will not take one.
4. Walmart Pay, Walmart+, and the Walmart Credit Card at Murphy
Searchers mash three different products into one question: “can you use Walmart Pay at Murphy's?” Split them apart.
Walmart Pay (QR in the Walmart app)
Murphy does not run Walmart's QR hardware. There is nothing on the pump screen to scan. If Walmart Pay is all you have loaded, insert a physical debit/credit card, tap Apple Pay with a card stored in Wallet, or prepay cash inside. Walmart+ (10¢/gal, not a payment method)
Walmart+ is a price cut, not a way to pay. Open the Walmart app → Services → Member prices on fuel → “At a Murphy Station? Use discount ID.” On the pump, press Walmart+, type the six-digit code, then pay with cash, card, or tap. You can also read the code to the cashier with your pump number. Walmart credit card / OnePay / MoneyCard
A OnePay CashRewards Mastercard (Synchrony) is a regular Mastercard, so Murphy takes it. Fuel typically earns the card's 1.5% base rate, not the 5% Walmart-store tier. The OnePay Walmart Spend Card is private-label and Walmart-only — declined at Murphy. A Walmart MoneyCard is prepaid debit: it should run at the pump like any debit card, with the $100 hold. 5. Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and Tap-and-Go
Murphy's official payments grid lists Cash, Card, Tap, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Contactless works at the pump and at the kiosk. That is the opposite of Walmart-run pumps, which are still waiting on a mid-2027 tap rollout.
Find the contactless mark
On the dispenser it looks like a sideways Wi-Fi symbol, usually above or beside the chip slot. Hold the phone or watch there — not over the magstripe.
Apply discounts before you tap
Murphy's payments table marks several rewards as “Not available with” Apple Pay / Google Pay. Enter Walmart+ or Drive Rewards on the keypad first, then tap. If you tap first, you often get the posted price with no loyalty attached.
Authenticate and wait for the click
Face ID, Touch ID, or watch side-button. Wait for the confirmation tone, pick your grade, pump. Samsung Wallet and a contactless chip card use the same reader.
A tap is still a card transaction, so the $100 / $175 authorization hold can still post to the underlying debit or credit account. Credit cards are usually gentler on a tight checking balance than debit.
6. What Is CVN at Murphy's Gas Station?
CVN meant Customer Verification Number — a four-digit PIN you set when you enrolled in Murphy's old MurPay / TXT.Pay.Go system around 2011–2012. You texted a spend amount, got a one-time code, and typed that code plus your CVN at the pump. It was ACH from a checking account, not a card network.
That program is not how Murphy takes payment in 2026. The current stack is cash, card, tap, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Drive Rewards in the app, and the Walmart+ keypad code. If a screen still asks for CVN, treat it as leftover UI: cancel, insert or tap a normal card, or pay the cashier. Do not confuse CVN with CVV (the three-digit code on the back of a credit card) — outdoor pumps almost never ask for CVV.
Connect a debit card to the pump?
There is no Murphy account you pre-link a debit card to. Insert the card, choose debit, enter your bank PIN, or tap the phone that already has that card in Wallet. Drive Rewards identifies you for points; it does not store a payment card the way Walmart Pay does.
7. The $100 Debit Hold, the $1 Charge, and Repeat Authorizations
Murphy's payments page is unusually specific: temporary hold of $175 for credit and $100 for debit so the pump can confirm funds before it unlocks. After you hang up the nozzle, Murphy “immediately send[s] a release of the authorized funds” for the gallons actually pumped. Your bank decides how long the pending line stays on the statement — minutes to a couple of days is typical.
Murphy's FAQ is blunt: Murphy is not keeping the extra money. If a hold will not drop, customer care at 855-301-9523 will fax a release letter to the bank. To avoid the hold entirely, tell the cashier “$40 on pump 3” with debit, cash, or a gift card Murphy actually takes.
“Murphy charged me $1”
Card networks often run a $1 (or similar) verification auth before the real fuel hold. It should reverse. It is not a fee and not a gallon of gas.
“Charged me seven times”
Failed chip reads and retries can stack pending auths that later fall off. Screenshot the receipt, wait for settlement, then dispute leftovers with the bank — not with the pump.
8. EBT, Cash Back, and Checks
Illegal for gasoline
USDA rules bar SNAP from fuel, alcohol, tobacco, and hot prepared food. The outdoor pump will decline an EBT swipe for gas at every Murphy. Select Murphy stores are SNAP retailers for eligible packaged food inside; Murphy publishes that list at murphydriverewards.com/driverewards/ebt-stores. It is not every store, and it is never the dispenser.
Inside only, if the PIN pad allows it
Cash-assistance dollars on an EBT card are unrestricted. They still cannot survive a $100 pump pre-auth. Walk to the window, ask to prepay fuel as EBT cash, enter your PIN. If the kiosk's pad has no EBT cash option, you cannot convert SNAP to cash here — use an ATM that supports EBT cash, then pay Murphy with bills.
Can you get cash back at Murphy's?
Murphy does not advertise debit cash-back as a chainwide fuel feature. Compact Walmart-lot kiosks are built to sell gallons and a few SKUs through a window; they are a poor bet for $20 cash back. Larger Murphy Express stores with a full register sometimes run cash-back on a debit merchandise purchase — ask before you assume. SNAP can never be cashed out. There is no ATM in every kiosk.
Personal checks and federal checks
You cannot feed a paper check into a pump. Murphy's published payment list is cash, card, tap, and phone wallets — not check cashing. Compact kiosks generally will not take a personal check or cash a federal benefit check. Do not drive there counting on it.
