Walmart Gas Card & Credit Card Rewards: Does Paying With a Walmart Card Save Money on Fuel?

Roughly 2,700 people a month search for a “Walmart gas card.” It does not exist as a product. What does exist is a tangle of a replaced credit card, a new one, a prepaid debit card, gift cards, a membership discount and two Murphy USA programs, each worth a different number of cents per gallon. This guide prices every one of them against the live Walmart pump average.

The short version: a Walmart card saves you very little at the pump, and choosing the pump saves you a lot. On September 5, 2026 the average regular price across the 1,545 fuel stations in Walmart parking lots we track was $3.694, against a U.S. Energy Information Administration national average of $4.071. That 37.7-cent gap is worth about $5.66 on a 15-gallon fill. The best Walmart-branded payment product ever offered at those pumps, the discontinued Capital One card’s 2% back, was worth $1.11 on the same fill. Today’s replacement card earns less than that on fuel.

That does not make the cards worthless. It means the order of operations matters: pick the cheapest forecourt first, apply the Walmart+ member price second, and only then worry about which piece of plastic you hand over. The rest of this article walks through each product people mean when they search for a “Walmart gas card,” what it actually pays, and where it is accepted.

1. Every “Walmart Gas Card” That Actually Exists

Seven different products get called a Walmart gas card, fuel card or gas rewards card. None is a dedicated fuel card. Here is the whole field at a glance, with what each earns or saves on gasoline.

ProductIssuer / operatorValue on fuelWhere it works for gas
OnePay CashRewards MastercardSynchrony Bank, in the OnePay app (launched fall 2025)1.5% base rate on gas; 5%/3% Walmart tiers cover store and online, not the pumpAnywhere Mastercard is accepted

Walmart MoneyCard (prepaid debit)Green Dot Bank2% at Walmart fuel stations, capped at $75/yr total cash backAny pump taking debit; bonus only at Walmart-run fuel
Walmart gift card / gas gift cards sold at WalmartWalmart; Shell, Chevron and other brandsDollar for dollar, no discountWalmart-operated and Sam’s Club pumps (magstripe cards); brand cards at that brand only
Walmart+ membershipWalmart, $98/yr or $12.95/mo10¢/gal at Walmart, Exxon, Mobil and Murphy (5¢ in Alabama); 5¢ member price at Sam’s Club13,000+ stations via the Walmart app
Murphy Drive Rewards / Murphy USA VisaMurphy USA; First National Bank of OmahaPoints per gallon redeemable for cents off; Visa takes 5¢/gal at the pumpMurphy USA and Murphy Express, including the 1,093 at Walmart

Rates as published by each issuer, Walmart’s fuel-discount help article and Murphy USA’s payments page, all read in September 2026. Fuel earning on the OnePay card is not itemized in its own terms; NerdWallet’s review states the card has no bonus category outside Walmart, so gas earns the base rate. Check your first statement.

2. Where the 2%-on-Gas Walmart Card Went

Most of the “walmart credit card gas rewards” searches trace back to one card. The Capital One Walmart Rewards Mastercard, launched in September 2019, paid 5% on Walmart.com (including pickup and delivery), 2% in Walmart stores, at Walmart fuel stations and at Murphy USA stations, 2% at restaurants and on travel, and 1% everywhere else. A store-only Walmart Rewards Card ran alongside it. For five years it was the only Walmart-branded product that paid a premium at the pump.

Timeline of the switch

  • 2023: Walmart sued to exit the partnership early, citing Capital One’s customer-service failures. A judge sided with Walmart in March 2024.
  • May 24, 2024: The consumer card agreement ended. New applications closed.
  • July 2024 through early 2025: Cardholders were converted to the Capital One Quicksilver, a flat 1.5% card, with points moved over at one cent each. No new hard inquiry, same account age, new card number.
  • June 9, 2025: OnePay (the Walmart-backed fintech) and Synchrony announced a new Mastercard program with Walmart.
  • September 2025: The OnePay CashRewards Card and the private-label OnePay Walmart Spend Card went live inside the OnePay app.

If you still carry a card that started life as the Capital One Walmart card, it now earns 1.5% on every gallon, at every station, with no Walmart bonus. At $3.694 that is about 5.5 cents a gallon. The gas rate you remember signing up for is gone, and it did not carry over to the new program.

3. The Current Walmart Credit Card at the Pump: OnePay CashRewards

The card Walmart now promotes is issued by Synchrony Bank on the Mastercard network and lives inside the OnePay app. Its headline tiers are strong for shopping and ordinary for fuel.

OnePay’s published terms describe the 5% and 3% tiers as applying to Walmart purchases “in-store and online.” Fuel is not named anywhere in the rewards description. NerdWallet’s review is blunt about it: “Walmart+ membership or not, the OnePay CashRewards Card features no other bonus category. The best you’ll do on spending outside of the brand is 1.5% back.” The Points Guy, CardCurator and CardSavvy read it the same way. Walmart-operated pumps run on separate fuel point-of-sale systems that typically code as gasoline service stations, not as the store, which is consistent with that reading. Until OnePay says otherwise in writing, budget for 1.5% on fuel.

Details that change the fuel math

  • 90-day promotional rate. Accounts opened between September 2 and December 31, 2026 earn 3% on all non-Walmart purchases for the first 90 days. Gas qualifies, so a new cardholder briefly earns about 11 cents a gallon before dropping to 5.5.
  • Welcome bonus. The standing offer is $35 after $75 of spend in 30 days. Walmart’s card page is running a limited-time $75 bonus for applications submitted September 2–30, 2026, awarded as OnePay points. That is roughly 20 gallons of free gas at today’s Walmart price.
  • Redemption. Rewards accrue as OnePay points and cash out to a OnePay account or as a statement credit, minimum 25 points. No annual fee.
  • APR. NerdWallet lists the ongoing variable purchase APR at 20.99% to 31.49%. Carrying $300 of gas for a month at the top rate costs about $7.87 in interest, which is more than a year of 1.5% rewards on that spend.
  • Fallback card. Applicants who do not qualify may be offered the OnePay Walmart Spend Card, usable only at Walmart and Walmart.com with no ongoing rewards. It is not a general fuel card.

Which gas stations accept the Walmart credit card

Because the CashRewards card is an open-loop Mastercard, every gas station that takes Mastercard accepts it: Walmart-run pumps, Murphy USA, Exxon, Shell, Chevron, 7-Eleven, Costco’s Visa-only pumps excepted. The rate is the same 1.5% at all of them. The old store-only Walmart Rewards Card and today’s Spend Card are closed-loop and work only where Walmart itself is the merchant. Sam’s Club’s fuel help page adds two cross-brand rules: the Walmart store credit card is accepted at Sam’s Club gas stations, while the Sam’s Club private-label card cannot be used at Walmart gas stations.

4. The Walmart MoneyCard: the Closest Thing to a Walmart Prepaid Gas Card

Searches for a “Walmart prepaid gas card” usually land on the Walmart MoneyCard, a reloadable prepaid debit card issued by Green Dot Bank. It is the one Walmart-branded product that still pays a bonus specifically at the pump: 2% cash back at Walmart fuel stations, alongside 3% on Walmart.com and in the app and 1% in Walmart stores.

Two limits do most of the work. First, all cash back combined is capped at $75 per reward year, credited at the end of the year. At 2%, you hit that cap after $3,750 of fuel, about 1,015 gallons at today’s Walmart average. Second, the card carries a $5.94 monthly fee unless you direct-deposited $500 or more in the prior month. Twelve months of fees come to $71.28, which nearly cancels the maximum reward. With the fee waived, the MoneyCard is a genuine 2% gas card at Walmart pumps for the first thousand gallons of the year, which is better than the current credit card.

Green Dot’s terms say “Walmart fuel stations.” They do not mention Murphy USA, which operates 1,093 of the 1,545 stations on Walmart lots. Treat the 2% as applying to the 452 Walmart-branded forecourts and confirm on your statement before relying on it at a Murphy pump.

5. Prepaid Gas Cards Sold at Walmart, and What a Walmart Gift Card Buys at the Pump

Walmart sells gas cards; it just does not sell a discount. Three kinds of plastic on the gift-card rack matter for fuel.

Walmart gift cards

Accepted at Walmart-operated fuel centers, usually with a PIN at the pump or by paying inside. Acceptance at Murphy USA stations on Walmart lots is inconsistent: Murphy runs its own registers, several sources report locations stopped taking Walmart gift cards in 2023, and Murphy’s FAQ does not list them. Ask before pumping; our Walmart gift card for gas guide has the full acceptance rules. Sam’s Club’s help page confirms Walmart gift cards work at Sam’s Club fuel centers too, but only cards with a magnetic stripe, since the pumps cannot scan barcode-only cards. Balances can be checked at walmart.com/account/giftcards/balance or by calling 1-888-537-5503.

Branded gas gift cards (Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, BP and others)

Sold in-store and on walmart.com in $25 to $100 denominations and redeemable only at that brand. Buying one with a Walmart gift card is the standard workaround for turning Walmart credit into fuel at a non-Walmart station. There is no discount at face value; the only way these save money is buying them below face on a resale marketplace or through a promotional bundle.

Visa and Mastercard prepaid gift cards

Open-loop cards work at any pump, but pumps place a pre-authorization hold before dispensing. Murphy USA states its hold is $175 on credit cards and $100 on debit; Sam’s Club says $100 to $150 depending on state. A card whose balance is below the hold is declined at the pump even though it has money on it. Pay inside for an exact amount instead. These also carry an activation fee of several dollars, which is a negative return on fuel.

None of these cards has an application, a balance program, or a points balance. Searches for “apply for Walmart gas card” are looking for the OnePay credit card in section 3; “check Walmart gas card balance” is almost always a gift card or a MoneyCard.

6. Walmart Fuel Rewards Are a Membership Perk, Not a Points Program

Walmart has no fuel points. There is no Kroger-style “earn 1 point per dollar in the store, redeem at the pump” scheme, and Walmart Cash from app offers is spent on merchandise, not gallons. The only per-gallon benefit Walmart itself offers is the Walmart+ member price on fuel, and it is a flat discount at the pump rather than a reward you accumulate. Walmart’s current help article states it plainly: members “save 10¢ per gallon at over 13,000 stations nationwide including Exxon, Mobil, Walmart & Murphy stations,” with 5¢ in Alabama only. That is simpler than the 5-to-10-cent range Walmart quoted when the program expanded in 2022.

Station brandWalmart+ discountLocationsHow you redeem
Exxon and Mobil10¢/gal (5¢ in Alabama)~12,000Walmart app, enter pump number, pay in app
Walmart fuel centers10¢/gal (5¢ in Alabama)~450–500Scan the pump’s QR code with Walmart Pay, or pay inside

Sam’s ClubMember price (5¢ off, none in New Jersey)~600Walmart app QR at the pump, no Sam’s membership needed

Three mechanics decide whether you actually get the discount. At Walmart and Exxon/Mobil pumps, do not tap or insert a card first; the discount only attaches when the transaction starts from the app. At Murphy, select Walmart+ on the pump and key the code before choosing a grade. Two things it does not combine with: at Exxon and Mobil the member price does not stack with Exxon Mobil Rewards+ or the Exxon Mobil credit cards, and at Murphy the company states that Drive Rewards fuel benefits are not available on a Walmart+ discounted fill. It does stack with whatever credit card you pay with inside the app, which is the basis of the strategy in section 9. Our Walmart+ fuel discount guide covers the redemption steps station by station.

Break-even on fuel alone

At 10 cents, Walmart+ pays for its $98 annual fee after 980 gallons, about 82 gallons a month, which is more than most single-car households buy. In Alabama, at 5 cents, the break-even doubles to 1,960 gallons. Walmart+ Assist members ($49 a year) break even at 490 gallons. For everyone else the fuel discount is a top-up on a membership bought for delivery, not a reason to buy one. Cardholders of The Platinum Card from American Express can have the monthly fee reimbursed, which makes the fuel discount free.

7. Most Walmart Pumps Are Murphy Pumps, and Murphy Has Its Own Cards

Of the 1,545 fuel stations on Walmart lots in our data, 1,093 are operated by Murphy USA and only 452 by Walmart. That matters twice: Murphy’s loyalty products apply at those pumps while Walmart’s do not always, and Murphy is currently cheaper. (Who runs the pumps at Walmart explains how to tell the two apart.)

452 stations

$3.766 regular, Sep 5

The 10.2-cent gap between the two operators today is larger than any Walmart card reward and equal to the best Walmart+ discount. Where a town has both, the operator choice is the first decision. Our Murphy USA price pages and Walmart price pages show which is which at every location.

Murphy Drive Rewards (free app)

Earns points on fuel and in-store purchases, plus in-app games. Murphy’s own description: redeem points for “up to $1 off per gallon at the pump for up to 25 gallons,” with most everyday redemptions far smaller. Unused gallons in a redemption are forfeited, so redeem on a near-empty tank. The catch is on Murphy’s rewards page: “Murphy Drive Rewards fuel benefits are not available when utilizing a Walmart+ member fuel discount.” At a Murphy pump you take the Walmart+ 10 cents or a Drive Rewards redemption, whichever is larger that day, not both. Murphy also notes that Apple Pay and Google Pay are not available with most of its rewards, so pay with a physical card or cash when redeeming.

Murphy USA Platinum Edition Visa

Issued by First Bankcard, a division of First National Bank of Omaha. Takes 5 cents off every gallon at the pump at Murphy USA and Murphy Express (issued as a statement credit in Alabama), pays 1% back on other purchases with fuel elsewhere excluded, and redeems in $25 increments. No annual fee. Five cents is a 1.35% return at today’s price, below a good general gas card, and it is only worth carrying if Murphy is your everyday station.

Murphy’s other stackable per-gallon discounts

Murphy’s payments page lists a menu of prepaid and loyalty products that take cents off at the pump and, unlike Drive Rewards, can combine with Walmart+: Netspend and Payactiv cards (10 cents), the GO2bank debit card from Green Dot and the Serve prepaid card (5 cents each), and Scorecard Rewards (50 cents a gallon for 2,000 points, up to 25 gallons). Murphy caps the combined discount at $1.10 with points or 60 cents with Walmart+, and every rate is marked as varying by location and station.

8. Fleet Cards and Cash Back at the Pump

Walmart does not issue a fleet gas card. Business drivers searching for one have two workable routes. Fuelman states that its cards are accepted at Walmart and Sam’s Club fuel stations, although those transactions are excluded from Fuelman’s per-gallon rebates. WEX is accepted at Murphy USA and Murphy Express, and Murphy markets its own Murphy USA Fleet Card, issued on the WEX network, with automatic fuel accounting and rebates of up to 6 cents a gallon. Voyager acceptance at Walmart-branded pumps is not documented by either company; use the issuer’s station locator for the specific address before routing a fleet there.

On cash back at the pump, the answer is no. Walmart fuel dispensers and Murphy kiosks do not dispense cash on debit purchases. Walmart stores do: up to $100 per debit transaction in $20 increments at any register, with no fee. The practical move is to buy the gas, then get cash back on a small purchase inside the Supercenter.

9. The Per-Gallon Math, Priced at Today’s Walmart Average

Every option below is converted to cents per gallon at $3.694, then to a 15-gallon fill and to a 600-gallon year, which is a typical single-vehicle household. The station choice is included as a row so the scale is honest.

Walmart-lot average and Murphy/Walmart operator averages are from our September 5, 2026 price pull across 1,545 stations. National average is the EIA weekly retail price for the week ending August 31, 2026. Percentage cards are valued at the same $3.694.

Which non-Walmart card to use at a Walmart pump

The best card at a Walmart or Murphy pump is not a Walmart card. The Sam’s Club Mastercard pays 5% back in Sam’s Cash on gas anywhere Mastercard is accepted on the first $6,000 a year (about 1,624 gallons at today’s price, or $300 of rewards), and Sam’s lists Walmart and Murphy stations as eligible. It requires a Sam’s membership, which rose to $60 for Club and $120 for Plus on May 1, 2026. The Citi Custom Cash pays 5% on up to $500 a month in its top category, but Citi closed it to new applicants on May 28, 2026, so it only helps existing holders. The Amex Blue Cash Everyday pays 3% at U.S. gas stations on up to $6,000 a year with no fee.

Two exclusions bite specifically at Walmart-branded pumps. Citi’s Costco Anywhere Visa pays only 1%, not 4%, on gas bought at “superstores, supermarkets, convenience stores and warehouse clubs other than Costco,” and cardholder reports put Walmart and Sam’s pumps in that bucket. Amex’s gas bonus excludes wholesale clubs. Murphy USA stations code as ordinary service stations and are rarely affected. If a card’s bonus depends on merchant category, buy one tank, read the statement, and only then commit.

10. The Order to Stack Everything

1

Pick the cheapest forecourt, and prefer the Murphy side of the lot

This is 37.7 cents against the national average and another 10.2 cents between operators on the same lot. It is worth more than every card in this article combined. Check the live price before you drive.

2

If you already pay for Walmart+, start every fill from the app

QR code at Walmart, Exxon, Mobil and Sam’s Club pumps; six-digit code at Murphy. Never insert or tap a card first. Do not buy the membership for fuel alone unless you burn 980 gallons a year.

3

Pay inside the app with a real gas card, not the Walmart card

A 5% or 3% gas card on top of the member price beats the OnePay card’s 1.5% by 6 to 13 cents a gallon. Keep the OnePay card for the store, where its 5% is excellent, and for its first 90 days if you opened it this fall.

4

At Murphy, pick Walmart+ or a Drive Rewards redemption, then skip gift cards as a savings tool

Murphy does not let the two combine on one fill, so use the Walmart+ code on ordinary days and save Drive Rewards points for a large redemption on an empty tank. Gift cards, Walmart or branded, are worth exactly their face value and are a budgeting device, not a discount.
